MENTAL HEALTH

Good Mental Health
Have you ever been caught up in a situation that is really troubling you, disturbing you, driving you insane and distracting your mental well-being? And yet you hold it in with the fear of seeming so weak, vulnerable and/or soft? When you experience such a situation, you are mentally unstable. It is something that millions of people in the world are currently going through.

Feeling a surge of anxiety
Someone may ask “what makes you mentally unstable”? According to Mental Health Organization (MHO), it argued that one might be mentally unstable due to “psychological factors that may contribute to mental illness which include severe psychological trauma suffered as a child such as emotional, physical or sexual abuse, or an important early loss such as the loss of a parent”.

To come out as a victim of rape, abortion, sexual abuse, drugs, domestic violence or any action that is against human rights is something many people find very shameful and embarrassing and eventually decide to keep their misery under wraps with the fear of losing dignity and reputation in the society.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), good mental health is related to mental and physical well-being. WHO’s work to improve the mental health of individuals and society at large includes the promotion of mental well-being, the prevention of mental disorders, the protection of human rights and the care of people affected by mental disorders.

An old man suffers a mental illness.
It all starts in the family and then followed by the community surrounding us. Parents and guardians are said to be the major cause for distracting the psychology of the children and sometimes even in their teenage. They put much pressure into the mentality of children on issues concerning failure, making mistakes or sometimes interfering with kids’ life in making decisions and choices for them about life partners, careers as well as how to live their lives. In this era, there are people who are being forced to marry a life partner out of their obligation only to please their parents and elders, to choose a career that they are not passionate about only to satisfy their parents, or even to walk down the aisle when they are not ready to do so only to suit family wishes.

If someone fails the exams, task or a deal does not necessarily mean they are losers, so label them not. If someone is a long-time bachelor or single maybe by default if they haven’t found the right partner yet, or maybe by choice does not mean they are homosexual or impotence, so call them not. This goes out to everyone out there who is very quick in pointing fingers to people without knowing exactly what those people are going through in their lives. Sometimes it obvious we can never see the pressure the other person is under or the pain they are in. Therefore, we should try to see the situation from the other person’s point of view by putting ourselves in their shoes, and from there we will learn to think differently and to be more open to other perspectives and opinions. At the end of the day, its important to always be understanding of others and to stop labelling them in ways they don’t agree with. We all live our own lives, so there is no point in trying to figure out others when we often can barely figure out our own.

We all have somewhere along the line of time convinced ourselves that being vulnerable is often being weak, NO. Being vulnerable is being real, being real is being true. How we feel is real and how we feel has to be balanced. It’s unrealistic to feel happiness and joy and love 24 hours a day. Even the most positive of people will be challenged in life. In those moments of darkness, we have a choice; to allow the darkness to define us and become that very darkness, that is such a small part of us, but feels so much heavier because it is something we don’t want to feel. And we grow in our pain and find our brightest light. We talk to someone, we write, we ask for help, we open up, we draw, we laugh, we keep pushing and living and getting to know ourselves through experience and knowledge and life.

We are honest in how we feel even if it’s not a feeling we want. It’s easier said than done but it does and always can get better. Mental health is as important as the way we would look after our stomach if we got sick or how we would protect our hand with a bandage if it was cut and bleeding. Our mind is so important because what we think becomes our actions and our actions become our character.

Allow your heart to feel pain when you are hurt, never restrain your eyes from shedding tears when your mouth can’t explain how broken your heart is and lastly allow your thoughts to be free and have the best life. If possible, unfriend, unfamily, uncousin, unco-worker, unfollow a draining soul really quick. Blood may be thicker than water but nothing is worth stressing your soul. Let go of anyone who is not allowing you in being the best you, including parts of yourself. Clean out the closet of folks who have access to you and protect that energy. You need it! Let the negativity go and you will be okay.
Have the best life, peace of mind and enjoy life to the fullest.

  2. What a great article. Thank you very much for sharing this. Most people don't take care of their mental health. Man is a Psychosomatic being, having a soul/mind and body. We are normally concerned of our bodies, and of course, our souls but we forget about our mind or mental health. That's why when a person is sick, he or she starts by going to the hospital. If the problem persists, he will eventually shift to the spiritual help over stepping the mental check up. A person ends up thinking that he/she has been bewitched because a problem is not medical but psychological.

Spiritual treatment should be considered after being sure that the problem is neither medical nor psychological. We cannot put a spiritual garment on a psychological wound. It is impossible. A psychological problem needs a psychological treatment.

But the challenge which prevails is that our health system has not put enough emphasis on this. We actually have very few psychiatrists or psychiatric departments in our hospitals. We actually have limited facilities for mental health especially personnel and mental health centres.

Thank you for raising awareness about mental health. Everybody ought to take care of his/her mental health. Stay safe and may God bless you!

    1. You are welcome. I'm so happy and I feel honoured that my work really touched people's hearts. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with a hint of observation in our hospitals. You are absolutely right that our health system hasn't put much emphasis on the issue of mental health hence there are many people in our community who are the victims of mental problems and I'm pretty sure few or none of them know very little about mental health and how it affects our lives and wellbeing.

Honestly there are things to take note in your comment which I didn't include in the article and I encourage my readers to read your comment. Again thank you for sharing a word and please read the other articles and share your thoughts just like you did here in this post.

May God bless you 🙏🙏,and stay safe

  3. It's amazing and pride to me as a proud Dad seeing my own son becoming service to myself and others out there.

You've made it well my boy...

Mostly, people suffer from their own perception of things they are experiencing and facing.

People are avoiding facing reality and they do so because they don't know that they're dedicated to facing reality and embracing it so they can learn something great from it.

People are guilty because of the things they did back then, and they're still getting hurt and killing themselves coz they can't change that which pinches them.

The other thing that eats people is to forgive themselves and letting go of what is eating them.

We need to have power over our minds, we then gon' be the masters of everything, we go be the truest leaders.

Many deaths, losses and all that mankind is suffering from is rooted from our minds and our understanding in perceiving and interpreting the happenings that are happening daily.

    1. Yes! Absolutely true! That is an important area to acknowledge as it plays a vital role in how we behave as beings, our characters, attitudes and all that make us whole. You should understand that only you have the power to your mind and no one or nothing should get in a way of that.

Welcome to read other articles so you can learn more and have a worldly perspective.

    1. Exactly, that is so important to everyone of us. One should not be afraid to speak up and raise their voice. Dying silently inside is a deadly death and nobody should experience that.
